Pie My Way

Pie My WayIt’s no secret that dessert is one of my favorite courses. I’m a chocoholic. I love cake. And cookies. And pie. With whipped cream. Lots and lots of whipped cream.

Whether it’s pumpkin pie, or chocolate, or key lime, or pretty much any flavor, I prefer my pie covered with whipped cream. In fact, my mother had to buy two bowls of Cool Whip (or two cans of RediWhip) simply to ensure the rest of the family could have some topping if I got to the dessert first.

This is never a problem at home. I always make (or buy) more than enough whipped cream for everyone. But when I’m dining out, it can make things… interesting, shall we say. Case in point: this weekend LJ and I ate at a Big Boy family restaurant. When I ordered pumpkin pie for dessert, I asked for “lots of whipped cream. If I can see the pie, it’s not enough.”

Pie hides under mounds of whipped creamOur waitress was obviously a bit surprised. “Really?” she asked. “Yep!” I replied, smiling.

LJ chimed in, saying, “He really means it. If he can see the pie, you need to add more whipped cream.”

With a lift of her eyebrow, the server agreed. She returned in a few minutes with what looked like a plate full of whipped cream. “Perfect,” I praised. And perfect it was. All I could see was mounds of beautiful white topping.

The interesting part was the reaction from total strangers seated nearby. “Wow, that’s a lot of whipped cream!” “Is there pie under that?” “How can you eat so much whipped cream?”

I answered each one cheerfully. “Yes, it is. Yes, there is. With a fork.” To the last questioner, I posed my own question: “Have you ever tried it?”

If you haven’t tried it, let me encourage you to do so. I mean, if you like whipped cream on a couple of bites of pie, why not have it on ALL of your bites? For me, it adds a lot to my pleasure of having pie.

Until next time,

Play with your food!
