Grilled Asparagus

Manly Kitchen Grilled AsparagusIf you’re like most guys, you don’t really think much about the vegetables you’ll serve with your grilled steaks or chicken. You’re far more interested in the meat, right? But your guests might not feel the same way, especially if one or more of them are ladies. We would also do well to remember that a Healthy Man is a Manly Man, and vegetables are good for you!

One of my go-to veggies for an outdoor meal is asparagus. It’s easy to do on a grill, and it tastes great! Even better, it’s an excellent accompaniment to steaks, chicken, pork chops and a host of other things you might want to grill. It’s OK if you don’t serve it with burgers or BBQ. We don’t need to go overboard here.

Manly Kitchen Grilled AsparagusIngredients:

Fresh asparagus
Olive oil
Salt

Optional:

Garlic or garlic powder
Lemon juice

Instructions:

Cut the tough bottom ends off the asparagus spears.

Place asparagus in a shallow baking dish or pan and drizzle with olive oil. Using a spatula (or hands for extra Manly Points) flip the asparagus to coat each spear well – top to bottom.

Once all asparagus is coated with oil, sprinkle with salt, and garlic powder if using.

Manly Kitchen Grilled AsparagusCook over high heat on preheated grill. You can cover the grill to give the asparagus a smokier flavor, but check them every few minutes so you don’t burn them too badly.

Use tongs or spatula to roll asparagus to cook on all sides.

Total cooking time will be 5-10 minutes depending on how hot your fire is. You should remove the asparagus when they are nicely charred and fork tender. Don’t overcook them!

Remove from fire to a serving platter. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the spears if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes:

Manly Kitchen Grilled AsparagusThere are three basic ways to grill your asparagus:

The first, and definitely the most Manly, is to place them directly on the grill. You can place them perpendicular to the grill, or on a diagonal.

If that makes you too nervous for fear of the spears falling into the fire, go for Plan B and skewer the spears using 3 skewers for each set of spears. Instead of rolling them across the grill, you flip them over with a spatula or tongs.

If that still makes you nervous, or you just want to be easy on yourself, opt for a grill basket. Just know you may need to cook them a little longer.

If you want to use fresh garlic, mince it finely and add it to the olive oil to let it infuse and get happy for a while before putting everything together. Some people keep garlic infused olive oil in their pantry. If you know you’ll use it a lot, it’s not a bad idea to have some around.

Have fun, and don’t forget to

Play with your food!
