This stuff is REALLY hot!! This is not for wimps, or those afraid of serious heat. You have been warned.
Now for those of you who like a seriously hot salsa, this one’s for you. I came across this recipe some years ago and adapted it somewhat. So, let’s dive right in.
Ingredients:
6-8 Habanero peppers, chopped
1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup orange juice, preferably fresh, or at least no pulp store-bought
1/4 cup lemon juice
Instructions:
Put on rubber gloves! Seriously, do NOT handle the peppers without gloves, as you can hurt yourself very badly. If you handle the peppers without gloves, then touch your eye, you may well have to visit the emergency room. And if you go to the bathroom… well, let’s just NOT go there. Instead, put on the gloves.
Cut off the stems of the peppers, then chop. For a slightly cooler salsa, you can de-seed the peppers.
Finely chop the red onion.
Place peppers and onions in blender or food processor and sprinkle with garlic powder. Not garlic salt – garlic powder.
Combine orange juice and lemon juice. Add half the mixture to the blender.
Puree ingredients until smooth. If the salsa is too think for your taste, add a bit more juice at a time until you achieve the proper consistency.
Pour salsa into bowl to serve, and use as you would any other salsa.
Keeping your hands in the gloves, wash and rinse thoroughly. Carefully remove them to dry. Or to be even safer, throw the gloves away.
Remember: this is HOT! Don’t get mad at me if it’s too hot, because I’ve warned you several times. If it’s too hot, immediately drink a little milk, or eat a small bite of sour cream or vanilla ice cream. And then never, ever, EVER make this again.
By the way, you can make a sort of volcanic chutney by preparing this but not pureeing it. Leave it chunky and serve as a condiment. But do warn your guests, OK?
But it you’re like me, you’ll love this! Have fun and…
Play with your food!
